Jennifer Herrera on Siren Says: Governess Chat

On plant magic, matrilineal traditions, and switching genres

I love a chat with Jennifer Herrera

We first met when she bravely came on for an interview at my previous Substack, Oh Murder, to discuss her first novel, The Hunter. We had a grand time getting into all things murder.

Now, Jenny has accomplished the remarkable feat of switching genres for her second novel, Siren Says, and this chat was every bit as delightful and more.

Did we talk about murder? Ok, yes, we can’t help it.

But this conversation explores myth, magic, traditions that pass down lines of women, the Welsh heritage of the region where Jenny lives, and the process of writing a book in an entirely new genre.

Because Jenny is also an agent, we’re able to speak a bit about publishing today and the context in which she’s writing, so fiction writers: take note.

Books Discussed:

  • The Hunter, Jennifer Herrera

  • Welsh Witchcraft, Mhara Starling

  • If Women Rose Rooted, Sharon Blackie

  • Wise Women: Myths and Stories for Midlife and Beyond, Sharon Blackie

  • Ghost in the Throat, Doireann Ní Ghríofa

  • The Mars House, Natasha Pulley (details about September Slow Read here)
